The César E. Chávez National Monument sits quiet most days, and no one’s telling the full story.
This app changes that. It brings you the real history: the fights, the passion, the people who built the biggest Latino civil rights movement in America. It’s about struggle, strength, and voices that refuse to be ignored.

César E. Chávez National Monument
Preserving the Heart of the Farmworker Movement
In 2012, President Obama made the César E. Chávez National Monument official, a place that stands for the Latino civil rights battle led by Chávez himself.
Since 1972, this 187-acre refuge in Keene, California was more than land. It was a safe zone when threats of violence loomed. It was the heart of the United Farm Workers union and the ground where Chávez’s biggest wins were made.
Challenge
Bringing César Chávez’s Legacy to Your Fingertips
The monument’s open all year, but with just one superintendent on site, the story often goes unheard. That’s why the app was built to share Chávez’s life and the fight behind the biggest Latino civil rights movement in U.S. history. But an app alone isn’t enough. It needed real stories, real moments to make that legacy come alive.
Solution
Building History That Hits Hard and Rings True
I dove deep into archives and teamed up with historians to get every detail right. No shortcuts. No guesses. From the monument to La Paz and all across California’s Central Valley, I gathered the stories and facts that bring Chávez’s legacy to life, raw, real, and unfiltered.

Designing Content That Honors a Legacy
I dug into research and crafted text and visuals that meet federal standards and make the app easy to use for everyone. By weaving together different voices and stories, the app pulls people in while paying respect to César Chávez and the farmworker movement that changed everything.
Now, the app is live and available on the App Store, bringing that legacy straight to your fingertips.
My Role
I served as the Digital History Intern for César E. Chávez National Monument in Tehachapi, California, from December 2019–March 2020.
